fulani-herdsmen Nasarawa crisis: 10 people feared dead, houses razed

No fewer than 10 persons were feared killed and many houses set ablaze yesterday during an early morning raid on Eggon community of Gidan Gambo in Lafia East Development Area of Nasarawa State.
The attackers, believed to be Fulani mercenaries armed with Ak 47 rifles defied the early morning rain and launched a surprise attack on the village, killing 10 people and injuring scores, before setting many houses ablaze.
The attack on Gidan Gambo is the latest in the serial attacks on Eggon communities carried out by suspected Fulani insurgents in recent times since hostilities broke out between the warring parties in the state.
A resident of Gidan Gambo, Likita Alaku, who escaped from the attack, told Daily Sun that the Fulani, numbering over 300, armed with AK 47 rifles invaded the village at about 6 a.m. and opened fire, killing any person in sight and burning houses.
“We woke up and saw many Fulani people with AK 47 rifles surrounding the village, shooting in all directions and burning houses,” he said.
Alaku, who lamented the sophisticated weapons in possession of the invading Fulani, called on both federal, state government and security agencies to disarm the gunmen to prevent them from further attacks on innocent people.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nasarawa State Police Command, Umaru Ismaila Numan, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said only one person was killed. Numan said policemen had been deployed to the scene to restore normalcy in the area.

Synagogue Church Collapse Death Toll Now 115 – South African Minister

The death toll from the Nigerian church collapse has now climbed to 115 people, with 84 of them South Africans, a South African minister said Monday, citing sources in Lagos.
“We understand from our assessment team that the total number of people who have perished is now 115, but those are not all South Africans. South Africans (are) about 84 that have died,” Jeff Radebe, the minister in charge of Pretoria’s response to the disaster, told reporters.
Speaking after around two dozen injured survivors were repatriated home, Radebe revised the numbers of injured that arrived to 25 because one had chosen to return to the church which crumbled in Lagos on September 12.
The plan was to bring back all the 26, but “there were only 25 who actually boarded the aircraft because one returned to the synagogue yesterday,” said Radebe.
The 26 survived after being trapped under rubble when a guesthouse attached to the church run by a prominent Nigerian preacher TB Joshua collapsed more than a week ago.
A 19-member medical team including specialised doctors, nurses and medical military paramedics took care of the injured on board a military C-130 aircraft.
“It’s the biggest evacuation effort by the (South African) Air Force since the dawn of democracy,” two decades ago, said Radebe.
Two orphaned toddlers – that lost their parents in the tragedy – were among the survivors that returned on Monday.

India Reaches Mars on First Attempt

New Delhi (Xinhua/NAN) – India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said on Wednesday that India has become the first nation to have successfully reached Mars on its maiden attempt.
He announced from the headquarters of the state-owned space agency in the southern city of Bangalore, that with 74 million dollars, the cheapest inter-planetary mission ever to be undertaken, an historic feat was made for the country’s indigenous space programme.
“India has reached Mars, history has been created, we are the only country to have succeeded in its first attempt,” he said.
Modi said that the success was an indication that India was a country full of determination to succeed.
“We have made it a habit of achieving the impossible. Humanity would not have progressed if we had not taken such leaps into the unknown and space is the biggest unknown out there,” he said.
Modi said that Mars has got its Mars Orbiter Mission, (MOM) and the moment it was named MOM, he knew it would not disappoint.
He commended the efforts of the scientists of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), for the laudable achievements.
“You have inspired our future generation, in spite of our many limitations, we aspired for the best and the success of our space programme has been an example of our achievement,” he said.
Modi said ISRO joined an elite group of only three other agencies worldwide to have successfully reached the Red Planet.
“India has now joined the U.S. the European Space Agency and the former Soviet Union in the elite club of Martian explorers,’’ he said. He said MOM was launched in November last year, by placing its mission in Mars orbit.

Robbers shoot pastor’s mouth for begging them not to rape daughter(Photo)

The heartlessness of some armed robbers who not only steal from their victims, but also kill or maim them, was manifested recently when a gang of armed robbers attacked a pastor of pentecostal church in Abeokuta, Ogun State and shot him in the mouth for daring to plead that his daughter should not be raped.
According to information gathered by Crime Reports, the gang members, including Sodiq Asimiyu (21) a.k.a. Nokia, Lekan a.k.a Goddey, Ayo a.k.a. AY, Seun Ojo a.k.a. Sepe, Kassim and Sunday, among others, assembled at a hemp joint at Ojupa area, Oke-Bode, Abeokuta, on May 31, 2014, from where they took off to a robbery operation, using two Bajaj motorcycles.
They succeeded in their moves when they came across a man driving his Nissan X-terra Sport Utility Vehicle, whom they dispossessed of his vehicle in front of State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta. Unsatisfied with the previous day’s loot, the gang took off again with the X-Terra vehicle at about 5a.m. on Sunday, June 1 and moved to Elite area, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where they blocked a car driven by a Reverend at about 5.50a.m. while on his way to church with his wife and daughter. A police source further informed Crime Reports that the man was dispossessed of N150,000, a Samsung Galaxy tablet and HTC phone belonging to his daughter, among other items. Not satisfied, one of the armed robbers who eyed the cleric’s daughter with lust, ordered her to move away from her parents into the church, with the intention to sexually abuse her.
On sensing this, the Reverend was said to have pleaded with them to spare his daughter since he had surrendered all they wanted to them. In a fit of anger over the pleading, one of the gang members pulled the trigger of the gang’s gun and shot the man in the mouth. Not yet done, another member went to their operational vehicle, brought out a bottle of beer, opened it and poured the content on the man of God where he fell. They left afterwards.
Nemesis however caught up with Sodiq when he was arrested on September 11, 2014 when he reportedly came back to Abeokuta for another operation. He was caught with a cut-to-size single barrel gun put in a bag. Also arrested was one Tunde Egunjobi in whose house Sodiq was nabbed. Egunjobi was said to be the one releasing his motorcycle for robbery operation and had confessed to the police that he knew the gang members as armed robbers. Both are currently undergoing investigations at the Anti- Robbery section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, in Ogun State Police Command. Below are the excerpts of interview with the two suspects:
Sodiq Asimiyu
This is the first I would be going for robbery with the gang. I started with the gang six months ago. Ayo a.k.a. AY introduced me to robbery. I met AY at Saidi’s hemp joint where I used to smoke marijuana. He asked me to follow him somewhere but I didn’t know we were going for robbery. We went to Suraju a.k.a. Dajunja’s house at Oke-Bodea area of Abeokuta, from where the gang took off for robbery operation. I did not follow them that night but I knew they were going for robbery. Early the following morning, we entered the vehicle and started moving round the town looking for a victim to rob.
Suddenly, I saw that AY who drove the vehicle blocked a vehicle by the side. We ordered the driver, his wife and daughter to lie down and dispossessed them of their belongings. Kassim shot the Reverend and Goddey opened a beer bottle and poured its content on him.
I was given N40,000 out of the N150,000 collected from our victim.
I returned to Lagos after the operation to continue my meat selling business. I came back to Abeokuta recently and was given a gun by one Mojeed who is a cultist. He told me that there was clash between him and other cult members over the presidency of the Eiye cult to which he belongs. He asked me to join him on a revenge mission. He put the gun in a bag which he gave me. I was also initiated into Eiye cult about four months ago.
What happened was that anytime I had nothing to do, I would borrow Tunde’s motorcycle and one guy called School Boy and I would use it to snatch bags and dispossess people of their belongings. I used to give Tunde returns. I have been smoking marijuana for a very long time. I cannot remember the exact number of years but it is not less than five years.
Tunde Egunjobi I knew Sodiq and School Boy also at hemp joint where I used to smoke marijuana. I knew that they were robbers but I didn’t report them because we live within the same community. Sodiq was arrested in my house.
When contacted, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, confirmed the story, saying that the two suspects would be charged to court after the completion of investigations. Nigerian Tribune..

Police Arrest Lagos-based Woman for Selling Guns to Robbers

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has arrested a Lagos-based woman for allegedly selling guns to robbers.
Vanguard reports that the 34-year-old mother of two, named Sarah Emmanuel, used to be a hawker of wares before she delved into illegal arms dealing. She is also said to be a robber’s wife. She was arrested after robbers revealed during a police interrogation, that she was the individual who sold arms to them.
Authorities say Emmanuel was in the arms-selling business with her friend, Modinat. They often traveled to a border town
between Benin Republic and Nigeria where they purchased locally-made guns and re-sold them to robbers. However, Emmanuel has denied the allegations, stating that only accompanied Modinat to buy arms on just one occasion.
“I was arrested because my friend Modinat escaped. We have been friends for six years. She asked me to accompany her to Idiroko where she told me of her plan to purchase a gun for one Ismaila, her armed robber lover from whom she collected N25, 000. I only accompanied her to Ifonyin once….
I am a widow and my husband, who was an armed robber was killed by police, we were married for ten years but I didn’t know he was an armed robber before he was killed.
If the police release me I will assist them to arrest my friend Modinat,” she said.

Watch: MC Galaxy's physical assault by US promoter captured on video

Music star MC Galaxy was physically assaulted by a music promoter on September 13 at a local club in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. Rarolae.com got hold of the video footage showing the incident. Unfortunately, this video only shows what happened immediately after MC Galaxy was assaulted by the promoter called T. Spotlite and after police was called to the scene.
Here's what's they said caused the fight. MC Galaxy was billed to perform at a club, but when he got there, he found there were less than 40 people at the venue, because the event was supposedly poorly promoted. After waiting for hours to perform, the Sekem crooner decided to leave, and that was when trouble started. The promoter allegedly grabbed and threw MC Galaxy from his car and punched him several times. He broke his belt, jewelry and shouted obscenities at him until the police arrived to escort MC Galaxy out of the premises. The singer didn't go to his hotel that day because the promoter had allegedly threatened to finish him. This is more MC Galaxy's side of the story, we haven't heard the promoter's side but it's still wrong to do this to an artist.

FG defends $9.3m cash seized in SA, releases data on transaction

Nigerian Government has defended the controversial $9.3million seized from a private jet by South African immigration on September 5th. In a diplomatic discussion it opened with the South African government yesterday September 16th, FG said they are aware of the deal (money was meant to procure arms) and have presented documents on the transaction process to the South African govt as proof that the entire operation involving the seized aircraft belonging to CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, was genuine. Continue...
A source who spoke with Vanguard confirmed the on-going discussion between the two governments and said the seized aircraft has been released by the South African government. The source added that the money was seized following failure by Nigerian delegates to declare the money at South African airport "Nigeria and South Africa are getting closer to diplomatic resolution of the row over the $9.3m transaction. The two nations have opened discussions. The Federal Government has submitted relevant data and documents on the transaction to South Africa and insisted that the transaction was legitimate. It also clarified that the funds were neither laundered nor smuggled for any covert manoeuvres.
No launderer will be audacious to fly into a country in a chartered jet with such huge cash. The technical details on security matters, which necessitated the deal had been availed South Africa for screening. Based on initial scrutiny of the documents, the Challenger Jet has been released pending conclusion of a full-scale investigation by South Africa. There was procedural error at the airport, the team did not declare the $9.3million contrary to the aviation and Customs laws of South Africa. So, there was an oversight on the part of the delegation that went to complete the transaction.
Nigeria is trying to complete the formality and we are confident that the cash will be released for the purpose it was meant for. Movement of cash for strategic purchase of security equipment by intelligence services is not new; it is a global trend. The FBI, KGB, MOSSAD and others do it.” the source said

The soldiers had on May 14th revolted against poor remuneration and lack of sophisticated weapons to fight Boko Haram. On that particular day, the soldiers lost their cool after seeing the corpse of some of their colleagues killed by Boko Haram men. They immediately opened fire on their GOC, who luckily escaped unhurt.
The President of the Court Martial (military court), Maj. Gen. C.C. Okonkwo, while delivering his judgement said the 12 soldiers were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, mutiny, attempt to commit murder (shooting at the vehicle of the GOC); insubordination to a particular order; insubordination and false accusation.

Saudi Arabia: Black Stone Of Mecca Revealed To Be A Meteorite

Mecca| A group of geologists from Oxford University have finally lifted the veil upon one of the most intriguing cultural and religious mysteries of the Islamic faith: Where did the Black Stone of Mecca originate? Every year, millions of muslim pilgrims gather around the Kaaba, also known as the Sacred House, a cubic-shaped building at the centre of Islam’s most sacred mosque, Al-Masjid al-Haram, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for the ritual of the hajj, where pilgrims must walk seven times around the Kaaba in a counterclockwise direction, a ceremonial practice that has endured for fourteen centuries.
According to Islamic tradition, the stone was set intact into the Kaaba’s wall by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the year 605 A.D., five years before his first revelation. Since then it has been broken into a number of fragments and is now cemented into a silver frame in the side of the Kaaba. Its physical appearance is that of a fragmented dark rock, polished smooth by the hands of millions of pilgrims.
Islamic tradition holds that it fell from Heaven to show Adam and Eve where to build an altar
Anthony Hampton and his team of geologists had, from the beginning, a major problem to further their examination of the Stone of the Kaaba since it may not be examined or fragments taken from it. “Part of the fog surrounding this stone is that the stone’s caretakers haven’t allowed any scientific tests to be performed on the stone, for obvious cultural and religious reasons, so we had to think of other ways of gathering information about this sacred object” he explains.
Local samples of sand where taken from a 2 km radius from the emplacement of the stone, which revealed its first clues. “We found important quantities of iridium, a metal that is found in meteorites with an abundance much higher than its average abundance in the Earth’s crust. We also found many shatter cones, a rare geological feature that is only known to form in the bedrock beneath meteorite impact craters or underground nuclear explosions” he adds.

Multiple evidence of shatter cones near Mecca prove that local rock formations in the surrounding area have been subjected to extreme shock and pressures The team of researchers hope the discovery will help shed light on the origin of the stone but also on the origins of Islam itself. “It is very interesting to see how, what started as the pagan worship of a meteorite, bloomed into, a few centuries later, a monotheistic religion that has spread around the world” comments religious historian Ahmed Ben Alifa.
